An 1870’s black straw mourning bonnet, minimally trimmed with black velvet lining, and no decoration beyond black satin ribbon ties which are badly shattering as shown. The hat is lined with black silk which is shattering lightly as shown. The velvet which is fading almost to navy has white thread chains inside likely for decoration or hat pins.
The bonnets shaping has a notch in back, likely to fit a bun or other hairstyle in the back of the head.
